ORCHID QUEST SOCIAL EVENT

Our keynote speaker, Sam Tsui has consented to give an additional talk at the end of Orchid Quest on Saturday at a dinner for all who would like to attend. His talk will be "The Care and Culture of Brachypetalum & Parvisepalum".

The dinner will be at Benvenuto's Italian Grill at 5:45 p.m. Saturday (transportation can be provided). Dinner will include  an assortment of Italian dishes, and will include bread, salad, dessert, soda and coffee. Wine can be purchased additionally if desired.

The dinner will be $30 and includes tax and gratuity. Advance reservations are necessary. Reserve your spot before Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016. The ease of Growing Multifloral Paphiopedilum – the Tropical Lady Slipper

Sam was born in Hong Kong on November 23, 1952. He traveled to the United States at the age of 22. He attended Illinois State University graduating with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a minor in accounting. He has since completed his MBA.

He began growing orchids in the early 1980’s. He commercially grows and hybridizes Paphiopedilums in his 6,000 sq.ft. greenhouse, Orchid Inn, Inc, Bloomington, IL [email protected]. Currently he makes over 300 crosses, produces 4,000-5,000 flasks or approximately 100,000 seedlings annually.

Sam gives more than 15 Paphiopedilum programs/lectures to orchid conferences, societies and groups annually in the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia and Europe. Over the past 12 years, he has judged at the Japan Grand Prix, the world’s largest orchid show.

As a result of Sam’s breeding program, his orchids have been honored more than 160 awards from the American Orchid Society, Cymbidium Society of America and European Orchid Congress. His most prestigious awards include seven First Class Certificate (FCC/AOS) awards; three Cultural awards including a 93 points Certificate of Cultural Excellence (CCE/AOS) award; and six breeder Award of Quality (AQ/AOS) awards. All these awards are from American Orchid Society.

From the north: Take I-90/94 toward Madison; keep right to take I-90/I-39 S toward Chicago. After 4 miles merge onto US-12 West Beltline Hwy., exit 142A, toward Madison. After 15 miles take Greenway Blvd, exit 252. Go left onto Greenway Blvd. Take first light go left onto John Q Hammons Dr. The Marriott will be on your left.

From the south: Take I-90/I-39 north toward Madison. Merge onto US West Beltline Hwy., exit 142A on the left toward Madison. After 15 miles take exit Greenway Blvd, exit 252. Go left onto Greenway Blvd. Take the first light go left onto John Q Hammons Dr. The Marriott will be on your left.

The Marriott conference center is the host for all the usual huge orchid displays in the exhibit area and thousands of fragrant orchids for sale from vendors. Also planned will be the growing seminars, quilts, artwork, painted porcelain, raffle, silent auction, a bistro area and plenty of advice for new orchid growers!

The show is Saturday, January 30, 10 a. m. to 5 p. m. and Sunday, January 31, 10 a. m. to 4 p. m.. One day admission is only $9 and a two day pass to hear all the speakers is $14. (Remember, NO parking fee at the Marriott Madison West) Prearranged tour groups of 10 or more can receive discounts. Call (608) 592-7906, Children 12 and under are free.

In the middle of winter it is so delightful to be surrounded by the colorful and exotic fragrance of the world at a handy and comfortable location. It will be the 29th year for the Madison Orchid Growers Guild to host Orchid Quest.
